The last wild camels on earth no longer wander the African planes or Arabian deserts. Their only refuge is Australia’s Red Heart. More than half a million dromedaries share the outback with kangaroos, dingoes and two exotic neighbours of German origin: biologists Birgit Doerges and Juergen Heucke. Almost everything that is known about camel behaviour in the wild is based upon their research. Now, after almost two decades of dusty investigation, the scientists’ final year of bush adventure has begun. It’s the annual mating season and the usually docile animals are loosing their calm. Which bull will win the right to mate: Hook Nose, the old harem master, or newcomer Elvis?
